Charity and redistributive taxation in a unionized economy ¬リニ
نویسنده
چکیده
European economies are characterized by unionized labor markets and a pronounced governmental redistribution of income. This paper studies a model where those two features are combined with the possibility for individuals to make charitable contributions to the poor. The model exhibits equilibrium unemployment that increases with the degree of altruism. It is shown that a more progressive income tax can both reduce the unemployment rate and improve the public budget. These results are driven by charity increasing wage pressure and the altruistic rich failing to internalize the e¤ect of their donations on the wage setting behavior of the unions. This paper studies the relationship between redistributive taxation and tax-deductible charitable contributions. Redistribution has two opposite effects on voluntary giving. However, redistribution leads to lower consumption for the cont...

This paper develops an endogenous growth model with redistributive taxation in which the growth rate of the economy affects the agents’ preferences over redistributive policies, and therefore, the equilibrium level of taxation. The main mechanism through which the growth rate affects policy preferences is by changing the ability of the agents to learn their positions in the future distribution ...

Optimal Taxation with Capital Accumulation and Wage Bargaining This study examines optimal taxation in a unionized economy in which households save capital. The main findings are as follows. Judd’s (1985) and Chamley’s (1986) classical results of zero taxation on capital income holds. This is true independently of workers’ savings behaviour or the capitalists’ weight in the social welfare funct...
